Two people injured in four-vehicle crash on eastbound I-70

ST. CHARLES COUNTY, MO – Two people were injured in a four vehicle crash that occurred on eastbound I-70 on Tuesday morning.

Caitlin L. Dolezal, 26, rear-ended a 2007 Ford Taurus, driven by 34-year-old Steven J. Paffrath, in her 2019 Hyundai Accent, according to Missouri State Highway Patrol. The impact caused the Taurus to spin and hit a nearby semi, driven by 59-year-old William D. Protsman. A 2003 Ford Ranger, driven by 36-year-old Christopher B Wiggs, rear-ended the Hyundai. The Taurus traveled off the right side of the road and hit a fence.

Police report the accident happened on eastbound I-70 west of the Cave Springs Road exit (225) around 11 a.m.

Dolezal, of High Ridge, was transported to SSM Health St. Joseph St. Charles for minor injuries. She was wearing a seat belt.

Paffrath, of St. Charles, was transported to Mercy Hospital St. Louis for moderate injuries. He was not wearing a seat belt.

Protsman, of Keokuk, IA, was wearing a seat belt. Wiggs, of St. Ann, was not wearing a seat belt.

Both the Hyundai and Taurus were totaled. The Ranger sustained minor damages and the semi was not damaged.

Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.
