Derailed train blocks Highway 3 in Fairmont City

FAIRMONT CITY, IL – A train derailed and blocked traffic on Highway 3 near Packers Avenue on Thursday night into Friday.

According to St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Alton & Southern Railway train derailed around 11:48 p.m. on Thursday night. It was carrying six train cars, some of which were carrying automobiles. Authorities report 350 feet of track were damaged due to the derailment.

The train was traveling from the East St. Louis rail yard to a Madison, IL rail yard.

Investigations into the cause of the derailment are ongoing.

Highway 3 was blocked in the area for several hours. It is anticipated to be re-opened around noon on Friday.
