Man rescues family from Hillvale Apartments fire

ST. LOUIS, MO – According to KTVI, a man rescued multiple family members from a fire at Hillvale Apartments on Selber Ct Monday.

Arnez Merriweather ran outside after smoke began to fill his apartment. Once out, he realized a family on the second floor was attempting to escape the inferno.

Merriweather could not re-enter the building due to the thick smoke, so he told the mother to drop her 3-year-old child into his arms. He caught the girl and then helped the mother as she climbed down from the second-story window.

The family’s grandmother was next to exit the window. Merriweather grabbed her before they both fell to the ground.

After the family was rescued, Merriweather joined others in using maintenance ladders to help the remaining residents escape the building.

First responders transported the family to an area hospital. They are expected to be okay.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire.
