IL man falls off pickup tailgate, dies at Bass River Resort in Crawford Co.

CRAWFORD COUNTY, MO – A man from Illinois sitting on the tailgate of a pickup truck was killed when he fell off the moving vehicle at the Bass River Resort in Crawford County last night.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the collision occurred at 7:30 p.m. at the Bass River Resort on Butts Road.

27-year-old Matthew W. Hedrick, of Aledo, Illinois, was riding on the tailgate of a 2015 Ford F-150 pickup truck being driven by 26-year-old Joshua Bowen, of Bettendort, Iowa.

Bowen hit a bump in the roadway while rounding a curve, causing Hedrick to fall off the vehicle and hit the ground.

Hedrick was airlifted to Mercy Creve Coeur, where he was pronounced dead at 9:31 p.m.
