Springfield man injured in accident after falling asleep while driving

POWELLVILLE, MO (PHELPS COUNTY) – A man from Springfield was injured Wednesday morning in a car accident in Phelps County caused by falling asleep at the wheel.

According to a crash report published by the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the accident happened at about 5:30 a.m. near the 169 milepost of Interstate 44, near Route J.

Springfield man Brian D. Mavis, 40, was operating a 2014 Dodge Caravan when he fell asleep while driving.

The vehicle went off the left side of the road, and Mavis overcorrected the vehicle, causing it to travel across the road and off the right side of the roadway. The Dodge rolled over after colliding with an embankment, leading to moderate injuries for Mavis.

He was taken to Phelps Health for treatment and was wearing his seatbelt when the accident happened.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The Dodge was totaled in the collision.
