One dead, two injured in Jefferson County crash

HOUSE SPRINGS, MO (JEFFERSON COUNTY) – A 70-year-old woman was killed and two men were seriously injured this morning in a head-on collision in Jefferson County, according to a crash report published by the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The accident happened at 8:35 a.m. on Highway W, north of Byrnesville Road.

A 1997 Chevrolet CK250 driven by 32-year-old Clayton E. Soward crossed over the center line and into the lane of oncoming traffic. The Chevrolet hit a 2008 Honda Civic head-on, resulting in the death of the Honda’s driver, 70-year-old Catherine G. Nichols.

She was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:04 a.m. by emergency staff.

Soward was severely injured, as was his passenger, 30-year-old Robert V. Buckles, also of Pacific. Both men were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Soward and Nichols were wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, while Buckles was not.

Both vehicles were totaled in the crash.
