Wednesday, March 18, 2020 - About 340,000 Honda portable generators have been recalled due to the potential for fire and burn hazards. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the generators' inverter assembly can short circuit when salt water is present, possibly causing smoke or fire. Thirteen reports of short circuiting were received at the time of recall, including 10 incidents resulting in fires.
Honda generator models EB2200i, EU2200i, EU2200i Companion and EU2200i Camo portable generators are included in the recall. They were sold nationwide for $1,100 to $1,300 at authorized Honda dealers, including Home Depot and other home improvement stores between February 2018 and January 2020.
This most recent recall comes after 200,000 Honda portable generators were recalled in March 2019 after 19 reports that gasoline was leaking from fuel valves, posing fire and burn hazards. In that recall, Honda EU2200i, EU2200i Companion and EB2200i portable generators were repaired for free. The CPSC stated, "Consumers who took part in the previous recall for these generators should also take part in this recall."
Recalled generators have red or camoflauge-colored covers with the word "HONDA" and the model name printed on the generator's control panel. Consumers can find the serial number on a side panel in a lower corner. Recalled model names and serial number ranges are:
Honda EB2200i Serial Number Range EAJT -1000001 thru 1011342
EU2200i Serial Number Range EAMT-1000001 thru 2098790
EU2200i Companion Serial Number Range EAMT-1000001 thru 2098790
EU2200i Camo Serial Number Range EAMT-1000001 thru 2098790
