Firefighter injured, hundreds evacuated due to Affton plant fire

Posted on Friday, April 30th, 2021

AFFTON, MO – A firefighter was injured and hundreds of people were temporarily evacuated when a chemical plant in Affton went up in flames yesterday, KMOV4 reports.

The fire broke out at Manor Chemicals, located in the 6900 block of Heege Road, at about 2:30 p.m. yesterday. The facility was quickly evacuated, and firefighters battled a blaze that sent smoke 400 feet into the air. As many as 10 different chemicals were involved, as was a tanker truck. Explosions rocked the facility as the conflagration spread into a 4-alarm fire.

By 4 p.m., fire officials had issued an evacuation order for everyone living within half a mile of the plant. A total of 13 departments and 62 trucks responded to the blaze, which took about 90 minutes to bring under control.

The evacuation order was rescinded by 7 p.m., but not before contaminants had leaked into the area’s sewer system. The Metropolitan Sewer District deployed units to the area to assess the situation.

Fortunately, only one firefighter was injured, and no civilians are believed to have been hurt.

We will continue to monitor this story and provide further updates should more injuries be announced.
