Catchers helmets pose risk of head injury.
Monday, February 10, 2020 – Rawlings Sporting Goods, Inc. of St. Louis, Missouri issued a recall Feb. 6, 2020 of its Rawlings CHMACH-SR (Senior) Catchers Helmet due to the helmet’s potentially defective back plate. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the helmet’s back plate can fail to protect the athlete, putting him or her at risk for a head injury.
The helmets in question were sold in color combinations of green and white (UPC 083321545511); black and white (UPC 083321545504); navy and white (UPC 083321545528); and red and white (UPC 083321545566). Each has a gray chin strap.
UPC codes are printed on detachable hangtags found on the helmet at the time of sale. Hangtags are also imprinted with the word “MACH.” Inside the helmets are stickers that read, “CHMACH-SR-RevA.”
The helmets in question were manufactured in China and sold for approximately $200 each online and in retail stores throughout the United States and Canada from July 2018 through September 2019. Approximately 1,470 helmets are involved in the recall.
No injuries have been reported; the recall is a precautionary measure.
What to Do if You have a Recalled Catchers Helmet
According to CPSC, “Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled catcher’s helmets and contact Rawlings to receive a free replacement back plate for head sizes 7.5 and below or a full refund for head sizes above 7.5.”
