Boppy Newborn Loungers Linked to at Least 8 Baby Deaths

Pottery Barn Kids’ Boppy Newborn Loungers, Boppy Original Newborn Loungers, and Boppy Preferred Newborn Loungers — the complete line of Boppy Newborn Loungers — have been recalled by The Boppy Co. after at least eight babies suffocated in the pillows. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), over 3 million loungers have been sold, and parents and caretakers should stop using them immediately.

The deaths were reported between December 2015 and June 2020. All involved suffocation after the babies were placed on their sides, stomachs, or backs in the lounger.

“Infants can suffocate if they roll, move, or are placed on the lounger in a position that obstructs breathing, or roll off the lounger onto an external surface, such as an adult pillow or soft bedding that obstructs breathing,” said the CPSC warning.

The loungers were sold in a variety of colors and designs through children’s product stores and online nationwide, including Pottery Barn Kids, Target, Walmart, and Amazon.

Boppy products are the latest of several popular loungers and sleepers linked to the deaths of infants. Recently, the House Committee on Oversight and Reform investigated more than 50 infant deaths tied to Fisher Price Rock ‘n Play sleepers. The committee found that Fisher-Price executives ignored continuous safety warnings about the sleepers, even after infants began to roll over and die in them. It also found that Fisher-Price didn’t adequately test the products for safety before making millions of dollars from sales beginning in 2009.

In the past decade, other infant sleepers, infant swings, and many other toys and products that pose a suffocation risk have also come under fire. OnderLaw has been involved in many of these litigations because, for the parents of these children, it’s not just a case; it’s their families and their lives that are devastated.

What Can I Do if My Child Was Injured While in a Boppy Lounger?

When a child is senselessly injured or killed while using a product that is supposed to be safe for them, it breaks our hearts. We believe that not only is it important to make sure families receive the compensation they deserve, but that it’s critical for all of us to act to make sure other families don’t have to go through the same horrible loss. We empower parents to make a difference in the lives of countless other children by forcing companies to take accountability for their greedy actions. The best, and often the only way this can be done is through lawsuits.

If your child has been seriously injured or killed in an accident involving a Boppy Newborn Lounger, call OnderLaw so we can talk about what’s next. The consultation is free, and you have no obligation.

The OnderLaw team has been involved in major litigations nationwide against the makers of dangerous children’s products. Jim Onder began his practice by taking on window blind companies and forcing them to not only pay for the harm they’ve done, but his efforts have also resulted in major changes to the window blind industry so that their products are safer than ever before. Since then, he and our OnderLaw personal injury team have continued their efforts to change the way infant product makers do business.

We understand the pain and devastation that happens when something bad happens to a child. We want parents to know that it is not their fault that they put their trust in a product that they believed was safe. Unfortunately these tragedies happen all the time, but we have the power to create change.

Contact OnderLaw if your child has been harmed. We can help. Together, we’re taking a stand, and together, we’re making a difference.
