66-year-old driver sustains moderate injuries in I-55 crash

ST. LOUIS, MO – A 66-year-old female driver sustained moderate injuries in a crash on southbound I-55 on Thursday afternoon.

Jean M. Atkens, 66, was traveling southbound on I-55 in a 2013 Kia Rio when she struck a 2011 Ford Expedition when changing lanes, according to Missouri State Highway Patrol. The Kia traveled off the right side of the interstate, hit a sign, and overturned.

Atkens was transported to Mercy South Hospital for treatment of her injuries. She was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

The driver of the Ford, 52-year-old Gerald T. Wheeler, was not injured in the crash.

Police report the Kia was totaled and the Ford sustained minor damages in the crash.
