38-year-old man killed, involved in five-vehicle crash on I-255

COLLINSVILLE, IL – A 38-year-old man of Swansea was outside his vehicle after a crash to warn others of the accident when a vehicle struck and killed him just after 1 a.m. on New Year’s Day.
Colt Hoffarth was involved in a crash on southbound I-255 near Blake Lane, according to KMOV4 News. He was walking northbound on the left shoulder to warn others about his crash ahead. A vehicle lost control and hit him, pushing him off the overpass onto a grassy area below. The vehicle also collided with another vehicle after hitting Hoffarth.
It is unclear if Hoffarth was pronounced dead at the scene or transported to a hospital first.
The driver that hit Hoffarth and the driver of the car that was struck declined medical treatment.
KMOV4 reports that the entire incident involved five-vehicles total. This includes the crash that Hoffarth was originally involved in prior to being hit.
Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.
