23-year-old driver sustains serious injuries in Highway 61 crash

PEVELY, MO – A 23-year-old male driver sustained serious injuries in a collision on northbound Highway 61 just north of Wontour Road on Wednesday afternoon.

Police report Michael J. Woods, 23, was traveling southbound in a 2007 Chevrolet Equinox in the northbound lanes of Highway 61. Daniel A. Kanmerer, 39, was traveling northbound on Highway 61 in a 2017 Dodge Ram 3500. He attempted to swerve right to avoid hitting the Chevrolet.

The front right of the Chevrolet struck the left side of the Dodge. Both drivers were wearing their safety belts at the time of the crash.

Woods was transported to Mercy Hospital St. Louis.

Both vehicles were totaled in the crash.

Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing. It is unclear why Woods was traveling on the wrong side of the highway.
