Friday, January 10, 2020airbagIn the largest product recall in automotive history, Takata has recalled another 10 million front airbag inflators installed by 14 U.S. automakers due to explosive dangers. This week’s recall adds to the approximately 70 million inflator recalls issued since a 2015 settlement with the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA). Approximately 100 million Takata airbags have been recalled worldwide.

The settlement resulted after heat and humidity has been shown to cause ammonium nitrate inside the airbags to deteriorate. The unstable chemical burns too quickly, causing airbags to inflate dangerously powerfully, blowing apart their metal canisters. At least 25 deaths and hundreds of injuries are linked to the resulting shrapnel.

The latest recall was issued on airbags meant to replace the original defective inflators, but that have been shown to be equally dangerous.

Audi, BMW, Daimler Vans, Ferrari, Fiat Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, Toyota, and Volkswagen are among the automakers affected by the latest recall. Some automakers have already issued recall announcements, while others are in the process of notifying customers.
