The distribution of oversized tablets has caused Ethex Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of KV Pharmaceutical, to recently recall six pharmaceutical drugs:
- Hydromorphone HCL Tablets (2 mg)
- Propafenone HCI Tablets (150 mg, 225 mg, and 300 mg)
- Isosorbide Mononitrate Extended Release Tablets (30 mg and 60 mg)
- Morphine Sulfate Extended Release Tablets (15 mg)
- Morphine Sulfate Immediate Release Tablets (15 mg and 30 mg)
- Dextroamphetamine Sulfate Tablets (10 mg)
The recalled drugs are used by consumers to treat a variety of conditions.
Hydromorphone HCL Tablets, Morphine Sulfate Extended Release Tablets and Morphine Sulfate Immediate Release Tablets are all used to treat pain.
Propafenone HCI Tablets are used to treat irregular heartbeats.
Isosorbide Mononitrate Extended Release Tablets are used to prevent angina pectoris (chest pain) due to coronary artery disease.
Dextroamphetamine Sulfate Tablets are used to treat narcolepsy and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.
Ingestion of the recalled oversized tablets can have serious or life threatening consequences for consumers. Such tablets may contain twice the dosage of the active drug ingredient and may cause users to experience:
- Death
- Hospitalization
- Palpitations
- Slow Heart Rate
- Rapid Heart Rate
- Irregular Pulse
- Low Blood Pressure
- High Blood Pressure
- Fainting
- Difficulty or Lack of Breathing
- Sedation
The tablets at issue contain distinctive identification symbols. Potentially defective tablets will be branded with either an "ETHEX," "ETH," or "E" marking.
