Although the use of seat belts and lap belts has been strongly promoted in the US, many people suffer serious injuries caused by seat belts each year. As a result of a defective seat belt, a person may suffer a concussion, spinal cord injury, abdominal injury, stomach injury, brain or head injury, or paralysis, rendering the person a paraplegic or quadriplegic. Many seat belt manufacturers and major automobile manufacturers are aware that certain seat belt systems are poorly made, and might malfunction in the event of an accident, causing serious injury or death. Seat belt systems can be rendered even more dangerous when the seat with which the belt is designed to work is not properly designed. Improperly designed seats and seat belt systems can result in “torpedoing” of the passenger either forward or downward, or if a seat is improperly reclined, the passenger might be ejected out the rear car window of the automobile, often resulting in head and brain injury and paralysis.
