Crane accidents are a primary cause of injury and death in the construction industry. Each year, hundreds of people are killed, disabled and injured in crane accidents. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has specified a detailed set of regulations relating to ratings, capacity, operating speeds, hazard warnings and adherence to the recommendations of the crane manufacturer. Most crane accidents are due to poor safety procedures or negligence.
The major problems associated with crane accidents are electrocution, improper handling of cranes, accidents when assembling or dismantling the crane, boom collapse or buckling, dropped loads, falls, rigging failure, upset and overturned (tipover) cranes, and mechanical failure. Most victims of crane accidents can claim damages for permanent disability, medical expenses, lost wages and loss of earning capacity. If the accident results in death, the victims' loved ones can claim damages for wrongful death.
