St. Louis Erb's Palsy Lawyer
What is Erb's palsy?
Erb-Duchenne Palsy, more commonly referred to as Erb's palsy, is an injury that occurs to the arm of the child during the birth process. This type of birth injury affects part of the brachial plexus and can result in paralysis of the arm. While it can sometimes resolve itself with time, it can also be costly and emotionally exhausting to both deal with and treat. In many situations, a victim of this type of injury will be required to undergo extensive therapy and surgery to help right the injury.
This type of birth injury is typically attributed to shoulder dystocia occurring during the birth. This occurs during a particularly difficult labor when the child has issues passing easily and requires severe manipulation, twisting and handling to get them to pass. In previous years, an injury of this nature was simply the effect of having limited medical knowledge and tools. Now, however, there is no such excuse. Medical knowledge has expanded and evolved over the years and an injury of this magnitude has no reasoning - in fact, in my situations it can be considered either sheer negligence or medical malpractice.
