Driving While Texting – Understanding the Dangers
Over the past few years, the true dangers associated with driving while texting have been thrown in the nation's spotlight. Distracted driving is nothing that should be taken lightly and has the ability to cause devastating
car accidents that put everyone on the road in danger. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, there are three separate types of distractions – these include the following:
- Visual Distraction - A distraction relating to when a driver takes their eyes off of the road and begins to look in a different direction or to focus on something else.
- Manual Distraction – This type of distraction refers to when a driver physically takes their hands off of the wheel and allows the car to operate without any sort of support.
- Cognitive Distraction – One of the hardest to spot and one of the most difficult to stop, this type of distraction refers to when a driver no longer is thinking about driving. This could be daydreaming, focusing on a song, trying to find something in the car or other.
The problem that is often noted with texting is that is encompasses all three types of distractions. Due to this harrowing and dangerous behavior, it has been reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that almost 18% of wrongful deaths that were attributed to distracted driving could be traced to the use of a handheld cell phone.
In fact, it has been discovered that drivers who use a hand-held device while driving, such as a cell phone, were almost four times as likely than a driver who was not to become involved in a car accident. Beyond that, these drivers were found to have delayed reactions that were akin to someone who was drunk driving.
