Attorney for Actos Lawsuits
GlaxoSmithKline released their best selling drug Avandia in 1999, marketing the drug as a treatment for Type II diabetes. Unfortunately, this drug was not everything that it was promised to be and was soon found to be the source of serious adverse side effects, mainly heart disease, stroke and wrongful death. In an effort to offer a safer alternative, Takeda Pharmaceuticals began to market their own antidiabetic drug, known as Actos in America. This drug, generic name pioglitazone, was approved by the FDA in 1999 and was a top seller for the pharmaceutical company for many years. Many believed it was a safe alternative and an effective diabetic treatment. The truth, however, is that this drug (like Avandia) might not be the flawless solution that it was promised to be.
Have you suffered side effects from Actos?
Over the years, there has been a growing concern regarding the side effects associated with Actos. In fact, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently released an updated warning about this antidiabetic drug. In this warning, they noted that the longer that a person took the drug and the higher t heir cumulative dosage, the more likely the consumer would have an increased risk for bladder cancer.
This was also noted in a study completed in France. In this study, it was determined that those who took Actos for a time period of longer than a year with a cumulative dosage above 28,000 milligrams experienced a statistically significant increase in risk for bladder cancer. In response to this study, France has suspended all sale of pioglitazone pending the results of an investigational review that is spanning the entirety of the European market. Similarly, Germany has requested that Actos no longer be suggested as a treatment options for new patients who have not previously been on the drug.
Bladder cancer, however, is not the only concern regarding the drug (although it is the most prevalent). Other side effects that have been noted along with the taking of the drug include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Weight gain and fluid retention;
- Symptoms similar to the flu;
- Stiff and painful muscles; and
- Headache, sinus infection and sore throat
It has also been noted that those who take Actos for an extended period of time are also in danger of experienced cardiovascular problems, as well as issues relating to the liver (such as liver failure or an increased rise in enzyme levels). With an estimated two million patients taking this drug a year, side effects of this magnitude are nothing to take lightly and are nothing to be ignored.
