Michael W. Shelton was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. He graduated from Arizona State cum laude in 1992. Mike graduated from St. Louis University School of Law in 1995 and his trial advocacy team reached the regional finals. Upon graduation from law school, Mike worked as an Assistant Circuit Attorney in the City of St. Louis from 1995 through 1998. While working as a prosecutor in the City of St. Louis, Mike tried fifteen jury trials in a three year span. Also, Mike began to foster his law enforcement contacts that he maintains today.
After leaving the Circuit Attorney's office in 1998, Mike worked at a well-respected civil defense firm in St. Louis. While working at the civil defense firm, Mike tried numerous jury trials and was exposed and privy to the insurance defense interworkings. He now uses that knowledge today to assist his clients.
After leaving the insurance defense firm in 2002, Mike was a founding member of the law firm Onder, Shelton, O'Leary & Peterson, LLC. Mike's practice includes all aspects of personal injury, including products liability, motor vehicle accidents, trucking accidents, forklift injuries, workplace accidents and workers' compensation injuries. Mike also assists in some of the pharmaceutical litigation the firm handles.
Mike has successfully resolved many wrongful death claims over the years. In one case, Mike represented the family of a highway worker that was killed by a drunk driver. Mike obtained a $1,250,000 settlement against the drunk driver and obtained a confidential settlement against the bar that overserved the drunk driver. In another case, Mike represented the family of a young woman that was killed when the underride bar of an eighteen wheeler failed. Mike obtained a $3,900,000 settlement against the two companies responsible. In another case, Mike represented the family of a mother that was killed by an out-of-control trash truck and that case was resolved for $939,924. In another case, Mike represented the parent of a teenager that was killed in a drag racing incident on a well traveled road in South County.
In addition to his full-time duties as a personal injury attorney, Mike works as the Brentwood Prosecuting Attorney and as the Village of Marlborough Prosecuting Attorney. Mike is admitted to practice law in the State of Missouri and is a Martindale-Hubbell AV rated attorney, indicating the highest level of legal ability and ethics, which is received by less than 10% of practicing attorneys.
Mike lives in St. Louis with his wife and two sons and enjoys coaching a variety of his boys' sports teams. He is also the athletic director for baseball/softball at the Immacolota Catholic Church in St. Louis.
